Grant Field: From Local Legend to World-Renowned Golf Coach

As the BMW Australian PGA Championship approaches, anticipation is building for one of the biggest events in Australia’s golf season. The DP World Tour kicks off in Brisbane at Royal Queensland Golf Club, with top Australian and international players vying for the Joe Kirkwood Cup and a $2M prize. Amidst the excitement, we spoke with Queensland local and renowned golf coach Grant Field, who will be guiding stars like Cameron Smith behind the scenes.

Grant’s journey into golf began at the age of 11 when he started caddying for his father. His passion for the game quickly grew, and by the age of 12, he was competing in social club tournaments. Playing golf every day became a routine, and by the time he was 21, Grant shifted his focus from playing professionally to coaching—a decision that would shape his career for decades to come.

“I found myself wanting to help others,” Grant reflects on his transition. Although he played professionally for a year nearly three decades ago, he realised that his true calling was coaching and mentoring. His philosophy is simple: help the person in front of you, whether they’re a professional or a weekend golfer. For Grant, it’s all about making a difference in the lives of those looking to improve their game.

One of his most notable achievements as a coach is his long-standing relationship with Cameron Smith, whom he has coached for over 21 years. Starting when Cameron was just 10, Grant now travels with him for nearly 100 days a year, including international trips. Their hard work culminated in Cameron’s victory at the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews—an achievement Grant counts as one of the most rewarding moments of his coaching career.

In addition, Grant has been named Australian PGA Coach of the Year for the past three consecutive years, an accolade he is incredibly proud of. “Twenty-five years ago, I looked up to the winners of this award and never imagined being one of them. While this recognition marks a career highlight, it hasn’t changed much for me as a coach, but it’s great to be recognised for many years of hard work.”

Looking to the future, Grant encourages young golfers to stay determined and follow their dreams. He emphasises the importance of hard work and not being swayed by negative feedback. His own journey of continuous improvement now extends to his son, who has recently taken up golf. In just a few weeks, Grant will be launching an indoor golf centre, Golf Mates HQ, which will also serve as a second home for his Golf Academy.

While Grant is known for coaching some of the biggest names in golf, he takes just as much pride in coaching players of all levels, from complete beginners to social golfers. Grant remains focused on helping each player reach their personal best, regardless of their goals. If you’re keen to improve your game, you can find Grant at his Golf Academy which is based at the Pelican Waters Golf Club, where he’s ready to help golfers of all abilities reach their potential.
